| Evelyn Marie Garman Martin, 84, of Elkton passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at her home.
Evelyn was the youngest of four daughters born to John Oren and Minnie Kyle Ratiff Garman on May 17, 1930 in Roanoke, VA.
She graduated from Jefferson Senior High in 1948. She married the love of her life, Richard Lyle Martin, Sr. on December 20, 1951. After moving to Elkton, VA in 1959 she became and active member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church. She loved music, singing, was a very accomplished seamstress, and was an excellent bookkeeper. She never forgot a birthday, always sending cards and notes. It was one of her favorite things to do. She and Lyle had an ongoing game of gin rummy. Evelyn worked at Wolfe’s Grocery Store and Dr. Charles S. Miller before opening Elkton Furniture & Carpet and Martin’s Grocery & Carpet with her husband, Lyle.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lyle Martin, Sr. on July 22, 2013. Survivors include her children, daughter, Linda Newton and husband, John, grandson, Lane Newton, all of Harrisonburg, VA, and granddaughter, Lindsey Newton of Smyrna, GA; son-in-law, Joseph (Joey) Martin Hepner of Mt. Jackson, granddaughters, Annan Hepner of Charlottesville, and Ally Hepner of Mt. Jackson; son, Richard (Rick) Martin, Jr. and wife, Mereka of Fredericksburg, VA; daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Shifflett and husband, Colby, granddaughter, Morgan Dean, grandson, Clayton Shifflett all of Grottoes, and grandson, Christopher Dean of McGaheysville; sisters, Frances Slusher and Mildred Giles both of Salem, VA; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Louise Martin Hepner and her sister, Juanita (Tiny) All.
The Rev. David Vaughan will conduct a memorial service 2pm Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton. Burial will be private at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends from 7 – 8pm on Friday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

Evelyn always gave of herself and shared her talents with family, friends, and to those she met along the way of life. Her sweet smile will be missed by all.
