John C. Christophel

John Clayton Christophel, 55, of Elkton, departed this life on Sept. 1, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

Mr. Christophel was born March 13, 1954, in Sellersville, Pa., and was the son of the late Reuben and Edna Schlosser Christophel. In 1960, his family moved from Lansdale, Pa., to the Valley, where he graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School and attended EMU.

Mr. Christophel co-owned Sierra Wood Stoves for a number of years before moving to a farm near Elkton in April of 1983 and was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church. John loved his life on the farm and spending time with family. He enjoyed traveling across the U.S., touring on his motorcycle and hiking in Shenandoah National Park. He was active in several civic organizations and enjoyed volunteering in the community and church events.

On June 23, 1973, he married Mary Joyce “MJ” Slabaugh, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jared Christophel and wife, Rebecca, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Jesse Christophel and wife, Kimberly, of Manchester, Conn.; two brothers, Peter Christophel and wife, Carol, of New Haven, Ind., and Paul Christophel and wife, Rebecca, of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Christine Mast Hill and husband, Ralph, of Dayton, and Suzanne Christophel of Alberta, Canada; four grandchildren, Ava, Samuel, Rosemary and Stewart Christophel; and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Deborah Christophel and Rosemary Smith.

The Rev. David Reynolds will conduct the funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday at the Elkton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Elk Run Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the Christophel home at any time.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Elkton United Methodist Church Roof Fund, P.O. Box 82, Elkton, VA 22827.

Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.kygers.com.

My heart aches for you and the loss of your best friend. May you be
strengthened and comforted as you reflect those special moments you and John
shared together. I cherish the memories of our hiking adventure when John joined
us. What a special relationship you two shared. Thank you for sharing that

So sorry, so sorry, MJ.
I had you and John in my heart all day Tuesday, planning what I might bring with
Dennis and me Wednesday. I kept wondering if it would work out. And it didn't.
I know it will be hard without John, and I'm so sorry. I can't imagine how
great the loss really is but I know you and John were best friends. I'm sad for
you and wish I could help.

MJ and Family
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. John was one of the most generous persons I
know and will be missed by many but most of all by you. MJ, I can't begin to
understanding what you are feeling right now. Jared and Jesse, I understand a
little of what you must feel, having lost my father at a young age also. I had
a tremendous sense of having been cheated out of something not to have Dad
around as I made my way in the adult world. Fortunately the acute pain will go
away in a few months and only return briefly at milestone events - births,
weddings, graduations, etc. And the blessing is that the pain will be replaced
by the many good memories that will come flooding in and bring great joy. God
Bless. Herb Reed

Dear Jarod and Jesse,
I read in today's newspaper about the passing
away of your father, John. I was deeply saddened by this news since I had met
him when the two of you were still at Spotswood High School, and he had been
such an active man. I was also deeply grieved that his passing was at such a
young age. You have my sincere sympathies, and know that you and your families
are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Christophel Family,
I was so saddened to hear of John's passing. I had
only known him for a couple of years from waitressing at Rooster's, but it
didn't take long to learn that he was a very caring man. We would make jokes
about what he would want to order for breakfast. He would always say, I'd like
some eggs and bacon, but my wife says that I have to have oatmeal. So oatmeal
was what he would have. Even when he came in with the gentlemen for Bible Study,
everyone would order gravy and eggs and bacon, he would still have oatmesl. I
would tease him and call him Mr. Oatmeal. LOL He always seemed so calm when he
talked. I'm so glad to have known him. I know you have great memories of your
life with him. May God be with you at this time of sorrow and lift the
heaviness out of your heart. God Bless you all.

Loss of a GREAT man....
MJ, Jared, and Jesse,

I had to actually attend the funeral to believe that
John was really gone. What a wonderful man, neighbor, and friend John (and all
of you) was. To be quite honest, I'm still in shock over his death and it seems
surreal to me that he's not with us any longer. There are people that we meet
in our lives that make us feel blessed for knowing. John was certainly that
person. I can remember him riding that little 4 wheeler of Jared and Jesse's up
the lane to get the mail. He was all smiles every time we'd see him. God truly
reflected in John's personality and it was so obvious to those of us, who had
the privilege to know him personally, that he was a Christian man in every sense
of the word. While I feel blessed to have known him and considered him a
friend, the world has suffered a great loss. However, I'm sure of one thing,
Heaven REJOICED when he came home! I'm just so sad that Ava, Samuel, Ros...

saddened by this loss
Mary Jane,
I was shocked and saddened by this news. I was in VA for the weekend
and my sisters told me of this. There are some events in life that stick more
than others. For me, although I had not seen you all or had contact for some
time, you and John were a very real part of my past. When something like this
occurs, we are forced to look at life differently. I just wanted you to know
that my thoughts and prayers are with you as you during this time of
transition.

We are so saddened of the loss of John, our cousin, whom we haven't seen much
of, but still feel family ties and yet we're sad about his passing. May the

M.J. Jared and Jesse,
I am heartbroken in the loss of John. He was a blessing
and an inspiration to all of us. I have so many wonderful memories of the
Christophel family. I will never forget Jared playing TAPS at Ray's funeral. I

memory.
I did not know John was so ill until a few weeks ago. The last time I
saw him was at Ciro's talking about his grandhildren. I did not know at that
time he had cancer. I know the grief caused by cancer and my love and prayers
are with you all. You all have a special place in my hear. May God surround
you with his love and give you strength in the difficult and lonely days ahead.
